A life-time ago, Nyandarua was home. Then greener pastures beckoned, Nairobi was the place to be, for everybody who desired to be somebody.
Then as now the rural places were grossly ‘poor’ in the contemporary definition of wealth. Ambitious folks would live here at the risk of atrophying. Luckily the lights of Nairobi shine bright enough to attract the villagers, like the proverbial moth, promising a way out. The risk of diving into the cut-throat crowded sea of survival, is hidden from their mortal eyes; for the offer is of little more than hope.
Indeed many swim to safe upper shores of prosperity, whilst the majority wallow in the muck downstream.
For these majority, even though hope remains, the prospects remain bleak. Yet returning ‘home’ is not an option. They eke out a living, somehow. There’s hardly anything left to send home…
The successful sons and daughters of this beautiful and highly endowed County dare not turn their eyes backwards. It is shameful to associate with such backwardness. They would rather pretend they uprooted themselves; except that they must invariably attend to the inevitable. They organise elaborate burial ceremonies of their so-called loved ones. Is it a way of atonement for the lifetime neglect?
Davida Getaway is a daring incursion into this virgin territory. ‘Swimming in blue waters’ is an appropriate reference to this new, fresh development in ‘the middle of nowhere’ as many of our guests are wont to say.
The challenges are a myriad.
It took guts of steel, and an un-equivocal passion for my adopted mother-County, to embark on this journey, to shine a light on this shadowy unpolished diamond that is Nyandarua County.
What drove me to it?
